Programmable drives for CNC purposes

  • Published: 08/09/2008

NUM has released a range of single- and dual-axis CANopen drives, said to be suited for positioning applications on computer numerical controlled (CNC) machine tools.

The drives are available in seven single-axis versions with 10 to 141A peak, as well as three dual-axis versions with output ratings of 10 to 35A peak.

According to the company, this gives machine tool builders a ‘granular’ choice, so the control system hardware’s capabilities match the machine specification.

The CANopen drives implement a subset of the standard DSP 402 drive profile, allowing them to be used for auxiliary tasks like feeding and unloading material.

The drives are said to be built-in intelligence for simple programming and usage. Bundled development software automatically recognises the drives and provides all the required libraries and functions blocks. The controller has an IEC 61131-3 compliant Programmable Logic Controller (PLC).

The drives can operate from a common DC bus, and the manufacturer claims almost any realistic combination of the new drives and the older servo/spindle motor drives can be powered by just one of its book-style power supply units, eliminating connectors, cabling and filters.
