ABB has introduced a bin-picking robot technology, said to be capable of reliably locating and disseminating jumbled and randomly situated materials from bins.

The system uses vision guidance software from Braintech, as well as the ABB IRC 5 robot controller.

According to the company, the technology is an expansion of robot automation. While random bin picking is considered mundane work for humans, robots have traditionally found it a challenge due to the potential for collisions and challenges with finding the right part from hundreds.

Robotic automation can result in faster productivity, improved quality, reduced capital and maintenance costs, as well as improved safety for workers.

Packaged as part of ABB’s TrueView leading edge vision guidance product line, the new robotic bin picking will be available for sale from ABB Australia’s Robotics Partners at the end of February 2009.
